Not the biggest map in open-world gaming, but it’s pretty country

It would take 216 hours to cross Montana on foot. Far Cry 5’s fictitious slice of The Treasure State, aka Hope County, takes 54 minutes.

That’s according to Conor Kearney, one of my favorite YouTubers. His deal is he walks across the huge maps of open world games and keeps time of the stroll. He’s done 77 of these across-the-map walks so far.

Not only is the time-lapse video somewhat soothing to view, there’s an informational purpose to all of this walking. It gives another sense of the map’s size, other than whatever a developer or marketer is usually boasting.

And in this case it shows how consistent Far Cry maps have been in size going back to 2008’s Far Cry 2. The times for the Far Cry games (excluding Blood Dragon) since then are:

So this is the largest Far Cry open-world map, but not by much. It’s also not anywhere near the longest walk he’s taken. That was going around half a world on foot in No Man’s Sky in 12 hours. And the longest Ubisoft stroll Conor has taken was last March’s Ghost Recon Wildlands at four hours, 10 minutes. which is nearly five times longer...

Spyro Reignited Trilogy arrives this September

After the commercial success of Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy, Activision is bringing back another classic PlayStation-era character: Spyro the Dragon.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy is coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Sept. 21, Activision announced today. The collection will include the first three games in the series (Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage, Spyro: Year of the Dragon) in remastered form. Those three games were original developed by Insomniac Games, which has since moved on to Ratchet and Clank and is developing this year’s Spider-Man for PS4.

Developer Toys for Bob, which created Activision’s Skylanders franchise, is handling remastering duties for the Spyro trilogy.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy has been “remade from the ground up,” Activision said in a press release, with “improved environments, updated controls, brand-new lighting and recreated cinematics.” The remaster will also feature a cast of characters that have been “creatively re-imagined with additional flair.” Activision promises “full analog stick support and smooth camera handling” and a reimagined version of composer Stewart Copeland’s soundtrack.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy will cost $39.99. Above are some images of the remastered trilogy.

Spyro the Dragon’s most recent stand-alone adventure was 2008’s The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon, but Activision’s popular Skylanders series was built on the Spyro brand. The first game in the Skylanders franchise was Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure.

Bandai Namco and Larian Studios bring the RPG to consoles

Divinity: Original Sin 2, Larian Studios’ acclaimed fantasy role-playing game, is coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this August. Bandai Namco will publish those ports of the PC game.

The console version of last year’s sandbox RPG will include “a user interface tailored for console play in both four-player online co-op and two-player split-screen co-op modes,” Bandai Namco said in a release. Content updates and extra features for the console version of Divinity: Original Sin 2 are promised in the coming weeks and months.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 was released for Windows PC in September 2017. The role-playing game offers immense freedom and interaction for players. The game stars “six unique origin characters with full-fledged backstories, personalities, and questlines: Red Prince, a haughty but heroic lizard noble; Sebille, an elven assassin; Lohse, a possessed musician; Ifan ben-Mezd, a mercenary ex-soldier; Beast, a rebel-turned-pirate dwarf; and Fane, an undead member of the long-forgotten Eternal race.”

Larian Studios successfully crowdfunded Divinity: Original Sin 2 in 2015 via Kickstarter, raising $2 million from backers. In our review of the game, we praised Original Sin 2’s ambition and gameplay, but criticized its cohesiveness.

Developer introduces a new playable character

We Happy Few, the psychedelic horror survival game set in 1960’s-era England, has been delayed once again. In an exceptionally candid YouTube video, the team at Compulsion Games said they are taking the time to rebuild the first few hours of the game. That extra effort will move its release date from April 2018 into this summer.

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); = id; js.src = ''; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); We Happy Few: What Is It?The second major update is now live for We Happy Few, a survival-horror game set in a dystopian 1960s Britain.Posted by Polygon on Wednesday, March 29, 2017

In We Happy Few, players will initially take on the role of Arthur, a man trapped in a dystopian version of the U.K. where everyone is hooked on a bliss-inducing drug called “Joy.” Players will need to moderate their intake of the drug in order to see the world around them as it truly is, while behaving in a way that does not draw suspicion.

The project began with a Kickstarter campaign, which closed in 2015, before moving into early access on Steam and Xbox One. The current gameplay blends elements of the survival genre with open-world exploration games, but the title will also...

Why wait until the content is live to find its secrets?

GTA Online’s “The Doomsday Heist” update will tie into the Red Dead Redemption universe and will perhaps solve a mystery in both franchises, based on findings from a recent datamine.

Update: Rockstar Games has confirmed the presence of the item. It’s called the Double-Action Revolver, which is both an in-game item in Grand Theft Auto Online and later in Red Dead Redemption 2. Completing a headshot challenge in GTA Online gets the user an in-game cash bonus and unlocks the weapon in RDR2. Rockstar Newswire has more.

Players have been digging through the game’s files and found assets and code that indicate a Red Dead Redemption-themed mission, where you can ultimately earn a new revolver as well as a bonus in the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2, is in the works.

We believe hints in-game are going to lead us to this chest and a new double-action revolver, which comes with its own challenge to unlock an exclusive RDR2 reward.
