What defines the best multiplayer games? Sometimes it’s not the game that shines, it’s the players. Deep gameplay and glistening visuals only go so far in making a standout multiplayer game, only humans can provide the unpredictability and scheming that turns the average first-person shooter or puzzle game into a gladiatorial showdown or cooperative crusade. But what are the best multiplayer games?

Looking for all the latest in the world of PC gaming? Check out the PCGamesN homepage.

Fast and frantic or tense and calculated, multiplayer games come in all shapes and sizes, but they’re all connected by the simple pleasure we derive from interacting with one another. Whether that’s two minds attempting to solve a puzzle or one player’s never ending quest to get one over on their fellow man, these games wouldn’t be the same without a bunch of humans running around killing, maiming or occasionally (very occasionally) helping each other. Here are the best multiplayer games:

You probably know Elon Musk as an investor and engineer, with interest in projects ranging between transportation solutions, sustainable energy production, and the establishment of a human colony on Mars. Musk’s latest project, however, is perhaps the most ambitious of all - a line of novelty flamethrowers. Apparently, those flamethrowers might just be in the next Borderlands.

Get fired up with a fiery list of everything we know about Borderlands 3. Fire.

The svelte fire guns look like they belong in a game, with a shotgun-like design and a logo for The Boring Company - Musk’s tunneling transportation venture - emblazoned on the side. Since opening pre-orders, Musk has spent the past couple of days on Twitter quieting rumors that he’s starting a zombie apocalypse to drive demand. “You’d need millions of zombies for a so-called ‘apocalypse’ anyway. Where would I even get a factory big enough to make so many!?”

Konami have revealed the system requirements for Metal Gear Survive today, and unsurprisingly they’re a whole lot like the specs for Metal Gear Solid V, which features the same engine and very similar assets.

Check out the best zombie games on PC.

The only significant difference between the two sets of specs is that Survive now recommends a GTX 960 as opposed to MGS5’s recommended 760. Otherwise, if you played the Kojima-directed game, you shouldn’t have a problem playing the non-Kojima-directed game.

In an astounding coincidence of timing, Microsoft have announced they’ve acquired cloud platform provider PlayFab. The acquisition bolsters Microsoft’s development of cloud infrastructure with Azure, and PlayFab’s tools have aided in the production of games across PC, consoles, and mobile devices.

Get creative with the best sandbox games on PC.

PlayFab tech has been implemented across 1,200 games, and has been used by companies including Disney, Bandai Namco, Rovio, Capcom, and Wizards of the Coast. The company’s services have been particularly useful in the modern era of service-driven, digitally distributed games, with services to help developers “engage, retain and monetize players.”

Japanese RPGs have come a long way in the past decade or so. Once accused of being too formulaic and linear, we have seen them embrace more progressive and open-ended design with recent titles such as Final Fantasy XV, Nier: Automata, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

It is into this zeitgeist that Romancing SaGa 2 released when it arrived on Steam at the end of last year, fitting in easily with its JRPG peers. But while it does go some way to present its world as a playground to explore, it doesn’t actually hail from modern times.

If retro JRPGs aren't your thing then perhaps the best RPGs on PC are.

This is a retro JRPG that never got its chance to shine in the West in the same way Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Zelda did, because it didn’t officially make the journey overseas until 2016 when it was released on mobile. Now that it is on PC, though, we can make amends and give it the credit that it is due.

Originally released in 1993 for the Super Famicom, Romancing SaGa 2 does not faff around when it comes to turning what...

There are rumors, and then there are capital-R Rumors, so big as to seem like the wildest bits of forum speculation. But a report published by Polygon today cites anonymous sources suggesting that Microsoft are looking at making some major acquisitions for their gaming division in the near future.

Check out the best games on PC.

Polygon say that “a reliable source close to Microsoft” indicates the company is looking at acquiring Electronic Arts. “Whispers” also suggest that Microsoft’s gaming division is interested in picking up PUBG Corp or even Valve.

Sega Europe revealed today that they will publish the first game from Interior Night, a studio built largely by former members of Quantic Dream led by lead game designer for Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls, Caroline Marchal. The partnership will see the companies “collaborating on the development and launch of a brand-new narrative driven IP.”

Sadly, we can't put games that haven't actually been announced yet on our list of upcoming PC games, but you should check it out anyway.

Based on Interior Night’s history and their stated intentions when the company was first announced, it’s no surprise to hear that their game has a big focus on story. We don’t know any concrete details the shape of the new game, but Marchal told us back in November that the gritty drama of shows like Breaking Bad and Fargo were strong inspirations.

Star Citizen has been in development for what seems like decades (actually just since 2012), and every week brings a little bit of additional info about what the impossibly ambitions space sim will or won’t feature. For example, did you know that if you engage in a life of piracy, you won’t be able to hang on to the ships you steal?

Have a look at all the best space games on PC.

If you jack another player’s vessel, you will be able to fly it, play around with it, or sell it, but you won’t be able to keep it. Stolen ships will disappear when you log off, and the in-game insurance system will allow the original owners to replace their vessels with relative ease.

The fifth and final act of Kentucky Route Zero could be on the way. Developers Cardboard Computer tweeted last week to tease the upcoming chapter of their game.

More than two years ago, we told you that Kentucky Route Zero chapter four was "nearly done."

The link in the tweet below takes you to a photo of a VHS tape, and a link to WEVP.tv, a website ‘broadcasting’ a live-action show from an independent public access TV station. There’s also a link to several other, different broadcasts, which you can find here. I’ll steer clear of spoilers, but there are plenty of easter eggs and various other hints hidden within that link, which you may want to explore.

Much like Ubisoft’s other big shooters, Rainbow Six Siege and Ghost Recon Wildlands, The Division is finding more success with a little distance from launch than it did during its initial release.

The welcome changes in the 1.8 update are partly to blame for this, as they have made the game more accessible to new players, which has drawn in a whole wave of new agents. It is more proof that, these days, a game is never truly done once it is released - adding co-op challenges, new missions, and more multiplayer modes can breathe a lot of life into these big MMO titles.

Need some more help getting started? Check out our The Division character build guide.

If you are one of the rookie scavengers invading The Division’s virus-riddled vision of New York then, you should find the following batch of tips rather helpful as you fight through the marauding thugs and rogue military personnel.

After one weekend, Monster Hunter: World is already the most successful Monster Hunter title of all time, and it’s not even out on PC yet. Capcom announced today that the game has shipped 5 million copies worldwide, including digital download sales across PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Check out five reasons why you should be excited abount Monster Hunter: World on PC.

Do note that those are copies “shipped,” including those sent to retail that haven’t necessarily sold yet. Even with that caveat in mind, it puts World ahead of numbers for previous top performers in the series, including Monster Hunter Freedom 3 with 4.9 million units sold and Monster Hunter X with 4.3 million.

You may be thinking it is the absolute worst  time to release a new graphics card, and you’d be right. So it’s a wonder why Sapphire are gearing up to launch their Pulse RX Vega 56 on February 12th.

Don’t fancy paying double for a GPU? Here are the best gaming mice around.

The Pulse features a fairly hefty dual-fan design with a compact backplate and PCB design to allow for direct airflow over the heatsink and out into your case. Despite some technical hiccups, the Sea of Thieves closed beta has been pretty successful, picking up over 170,000 viewers on Twitch. However, If you've been worried there's a lack of things to do on the pirate-filled seas, don't worry, Rare has been Saving the good stuff for release day.

But, of course, patience is a virtue many do not possess and someone has already datamined the beta client to uncover some buried treasure.
