Two Men Meet, Each Believing the Other to Be of Higher Rank, Paul Klee (Etching and tonal etching on zinc, 1903) [Please join me in welcoming columnist Herb Reichert to AudioStream. Ed. (yay!!)] "Knowledge" that a storm is a Level 5 hurricane with 200mph winds and 30-inches of potential rainfall is nothing more than a quasi-imaginable cultural abstraction compared to sitting on the roof of your house clutching your water-soaked cat - waiting to be rescued.
Here we go again—a company that's never seen a profit and doesn't make its product has a big opening day on Wall St. making its owners wealthy (or wealthier). Gee, how great.
I guess I could say this every month but there’s so much amazing stuff to share with you that it’s a little overwhelming. Many of these albums I’ve listened to several, even a dozen times already and can easily imagine them making the best of the 2018 list and it’s only April. A lot of intense and dark, mainly instrumental sounds with some rather light touches as well. Enjoy!
Pull up a comfy chair and join us for a chat about some of our favorite things.
Blame Stephen, again. Swedish singer, organist, and composer Anna von Hausswolff has made some dark magic on her latest album Dead Magic.
and the winner is... News Flash: Ethernet noise FOILed! For readers who have been around since 2015, you may recall my review of the DJM Electronics GigaFOILv3 Ethernet Filter wherein I said: The first change I made was to take the GigaFOILv3 out of the system. What I heard was a less refined sound, especially in the upper registers. This was a subtle change, and certainly not worth a grand, but the GigaFOILv3 clearly made my music sound less digital, less harsh, and more natural. While A/Bing is all well and good, having the GigaFOILv3 in my system for weeks was a better gauge of its effects since I very easily noticed a more relaxed and engaging sound over time.

Stella Donnelly's debut EP, Thrush Metal mixes heavenly vocals and guitar with hellish tales of horrible men. I've known more than my fair share of horrible men so listening to Stella Donnelly's lyrics leave me unsettled in that, "Yes I know" kinda way.

Many audiophiles that I meet ask me about the necessity of using USB enhancement devices and suggest to me that a well-designed USB DAC has no need for these products. I have reviewed many well engineered DACs that have galvanic isolation and take considerable efforts to isolate their USB DAC from computer noise that degrades audio performance. I have found that most, if not all, benefit from the use of USB enhancement devices to a greater or lessor extent. I have had the pleasure to review iFi Audio's excellent micro iUSB3.0; a device that I found to significantly improve the sound of USB DACs driven directly by a computer. The iUSB3.0 delivered an improvement to the USB signal integrity in addition to the power supply function. The USB signal from the computer is completely re-constructed, re-clocked and re-balanced by the iUSB3.0 before being passed on to downstream devices for both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 DAC connections.
The fine folks at Vinyl Reviews came out to the barn for a visit and a video (yes, I listen to vinyl, too).
Smerz is Norwegian duo Catharina Stoltenberg and Henriette Motzfeldt. According to Google translate, smerz means smerz in English, which clears up a lot of the questions I had. Have fun is their new EP, released on XL Recordings earlier this month, and you can take that title as invitation or demand, depending on one's preferences in these matters.
As plain as day. That's what I have to say about the differences I hear between the original Tellurium Q Black speaker cable, which I own, and the new Black II. What's more, I clearly prefer the Black II. ?

March in the United States is Women’s History Month. Complementing International Women’s Day on March 8, the month is meant to honor and recognize the many significant accomplishments of women today and throughout history. The celebration dates back to 1981, when Congress authorized the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982, as “Women’s History Week.” Then, in 1987, upon a successful petition by the National Women’s History Project, Congress agreed that a week was not nearly enough, that, instead, women would be honored throughout the entire month of March. Between 1988 and 1994, then, Congress passed additional resolutions to maintain the status. Since 1995, Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama have issued proclamations announcing March as Women’s History Month. And, somewhat surprisingly given his own words and actions, even the current president has followed suit. You can read his proclamation here. (If you’re into it, you can compare and contrast with President Obama’s proclamation.)
The Breeders are back and there's gonna be trouble (Hey la, hey la, The Breeder's are back). It feels like forever ago that I got to sit in on an early listen of All Nerve, The Breeders new album, at John DeVore's place with a few members of the band. If you are under the impression we all listen for the same thing and thus hear the same thing when listening to music, just spend some time listening to musicians listening to themselves.
On a lovely March evening, Herb Reichert, Alex Halberstadt, Stephen Mejias, and I met up at John DeVore's place for The Great DAC-Off!
The best places keep their menu fresh. With that in mind, we have re-organized AudioStream's menu structure to, ideally, make things make more sense while keeping pace with Network Audio's shifting landscape (e.g. I think "Network" audio makes more sense than "Computer" audio).

"Is there anybody going to listen to my story...". Being four (or perhaps five) years old I had absolutely had no idea what John Lennon was singing about, but I could tell it was important. If it started with the Beatles, it continued with Elvis. And Miles—"Sketches from Spain"—I was lured by the cool cover... And piano jazz, because that's what my parents were playing. The drive of Elvis, the patience of Miles, the urgency of John Lennon, the swing of Errol Garner and the beauty of them all, is what I look for. Pretense. Sure, but that's what I ended up with when thinking about what attracts me to a piece of music or a performance.
